What is the voigtl nder heliar 40mm f 2 8 aspherical good for?

The Heliar 40mm f/2.8 is a manual-focus prime for full frame, made for Leica M mount. On a full-frame Leica M, it gives a 40mm view. That's a little wider than the 50mm I'd suggest for most people, so it suits scenes where you want to show where someone is. For tighter portraits, my picks are still the 50mm f/1.8 and 85mm f/1.8 on the portraits page.

At f/2.8 you won't get the strong background blur of a f/1.8 lens. For how the f-number changes blur, see aperture and depth of field. Manual focus also means it suits slower, deliberate shooting.

It fits many Leica M bodies. Good places to start are the Leica M (Typ 240), the Leica M10, and the Leica M11.
