Should I upgrade from the canon eos r?

Only you can say whether it's time, but I'd keep the EOS R unless something specific is holding you back. It's a full-frame body at 30.3 megapixels, and it has no in-body stabilisation, so the lens you put on it matters more than the body. If your shots are soft at slow speeds, a stabilised lens will help more than a new camera would.

If you want a better kit without replacing the body, I'd look at the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM for everyday work, the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM for distance and portraits, or the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM if you want cheap low-light fun.

If you do decide to upgrade the body, buying used is the cheapest way to do it.
