Mirrorless or dslr for a beginner?

For most beginners, I'd go mirrorless. A mirrorless camera shows you the exposure before you take the shot, and its autofocus can find and follow eyes. Every major brand is also putting its new lenses into mirrorless mounts, so that's where the system will keep growing. Aim for an APS-C body with its kit zoom, and put your spare money into lenses rather than a fancier body.

A DSLR still makes sense if you find a good deal on a used one. The Canon EF mount has a huge used market, and its lenses adapt to Canon's mirrorless bodies without losing anything, so that choice doesn't trap you.

Don't overthink it. Read Your first camera for the full reasoning, and see buying used if you want to save money.
