Is the sony fe 100 400mm f 4 5 gm oss long enough for birds?

Only on the right body. On full frame, the 100-400mm stops at 400mm, and birds want 600mm full-frame equivalent and beyond. That's short for small birds at a distance.

On an APS-C body it frames like 150-600mm on full frame, which gets you much closer to that target. The Sony a6700 and Sony a6400 both take this lens, and that pairing is my pick for birds on a sensible budget. Full-frame bodies like the Sony a7 IV also fit it, but you'll still feel the 400mm limit on birds.

The Sony FE 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS doesn't solve this. It also stops at 400mm, so it adds no reach over the zoom.

For the full picture on focal length, see Wildlife and sport, and for my kit suggestions, my picks.
