You asked
Is the nikon d5300 good in low light?
The D5300 is an APS-C camera, so it's roughly one stop behind full frame in low light, as I explain in What a bigger sensor buys you. I don't have test results for its high-ISO noise, so I can't give you a clean verdict on the body alone. What you can do is lean on fast lenses, which gather far more light than the kit zooms.
For dim scenes on the Nikon D5300, I'd look at:
- Nikon AF-S DX 35mm f/1.8G, a cheap, sharp everyday low-light prime
- Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art, a fast zoom that covers wide to standard
- Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art, for portraits in low light
