You asked
Is the nikon af s dx 18 300mm f 3 5 6 3g ed vr long enough for birds?
Not quite. On APS-C, this lens frames like 27-450mm on full frame, and the wildlife and sport guide says birds want 600mm full-frame equivalent and beyond. At 450mm you can get good shots of larger birds, or of smaller ones that come close, but small birds far away will be hard to fill the frame with.
It's also slow at the long end. At 300mm it drops to f/6.3, so you'll need good light or a higher ISO for fast action. Stabilisation helps with handheld shots.
If birds are the main goal, the site's my picks point to a 100-400mm-class zoom on an APS-C body, which gives about 150-600mm equivalent. Buying one used is a good way to save money, see buying used.
