Is the leica vario elmarit sl 24 70mm f 2 8 asph good for astrophotography?

The site doesn't cover astrophotography directly, so I can only judge this lens by its specs. The Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-70mm f/2.8 ASPH is a fast zoom, and f/2.8 gathers plenty of light for star fields. At 24mm on full frame, it gives you a wide enough view for the Milky Way. The catch is that it isn't stabilised, so you'll want a tripod and will need to keep exposures short enough to avoid star trails.

For the wide-angle side of night work, the landscape page covers wide zooms in more detail. The aperture section explains why f/2.8 lets in far more light than f/5.6.

If you want more reach, the stabilised 24-90mm f/2.8-4 covers a wider range, but it's large and heavy. For night skies, I'd still start with the 24-70.
