You asked
Is the leica m9 good for street photography?
The Leica M9 is a good street camera, and a rangefinder suits the job. You frame and focus with a clear view, and the body is quiet, which matters when people are close. Its full-frame 18-megapixel sensor is plenty. As my street page says, small and quiet beats megapixels every time.
Two things to check before you buy. The M9 has a CCD sensor, so look for signs of corrosion. There's also no stabilisation, so you'll want to keep shutter speeds up in dim streets.
For lenses, I'd start with a 35mm, the classic street focal length:
- 7Artisans M 35mm f/5.6 WEN for a small, cheap kit you can zone-focus and forget.
- Voigtländer Color-Skopar 35mm f/2.5 P II for a compact, sharp option.
- Leica Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH if you want the best rendering and can spend more.
For the full list of M9 lenses, see the Leica M9 page.
