Is the canon ef s 60mm f 2 8 macro usm good for portraits?

It's a good lens for portraits, but it isn't a portrait lens first. It's a macro, built for close-up work on small subjects. On an APS-C Canon body, f/2.8 gives the depth of field of about f/4.5 on full frame, and the 96mm-equivalent view is long enough to flatter faces. The background blur is softer than a faster lens would give you, though, and it has no stabilisation.

It fits Canon APS-C bodies such as the Canon EOS 80D and Canon EOS 90D. Pair it with one of those if you already own it.

For a dedicated portrait lens, I'd look first at the options on our portraits page. A 50mm f/1.8 is the cheapest great lens you can buy, and on APS-C it behaves like a 75-80mm portrait lens.
