Is a compact camera better than a phone?

It depends on what you want to shoot. A good phone is a very good camera in daylight, so a compact only earns its place if it does something your phone can't. Real cameras pull ahead on zoom, low light and moving subjects, real background blur, and manual control. The full reasoning is in Your first camera.

If you do want one, I'd look at a 1-inch compact with a 24-200mm-equivalent zoom. It fits in a jacket, and its zoomed pictures are clearly better than a phone's. If you can live without zoom, a fixed-lens compact with a large sensor, like the Fujifilm X100 series, gives superb pictures in a tiny body. For more options, see Travel.

If none of those things matter to you, keep using your phone and spend the money on a trip.
