How do I zone focus for street photography?
Zone focusing is simple: you pick a distance, lock it in, and stop waiting for autofocus. The Street guide suggests setting focus to a fixed distance, say 3 metres, and using f/8. At that setting, everything from roughly 2 to 5 metres should be sharp, so you can shoot the moment as it happens.
Start by switching to manual focus and turning the focus ring until the distance scale reads about 3 metres. Then stop down to f/8 and set a shutter speed fast enough for the light. Practise walking around with the camera at chest height until you know where your subjects will fall in that zone.
If you're after a camera to do this with, the lenses built for it are small pancakes, such as the 7Artisans 35mm f/5.6 and the TTArtisan M 28mm f/5.6.
