You asked
Do I need a tripod for travel photography?
Mostly, no. My travel kit is one zoom, one small fast prime for evenings and food, a spare battery, a second memory card, and a lens cloth. I'd leave the tripod at home.
The exception is if your trip is really about night or landscapes. Then it earns its place, because long exposures and slow light need it. If that's the plan, landscape covers what to look for in a camera for that kind of shooting. For everything else, read travel for the full packing list.
